Get Rid of Squirrels - testimony 1

"I have had problems with squirrels getting in my attic for about ten years. The noise they made bothered me and I hated the holes they made in my house. I called a nationwide pest control service and they gave me the name of a man who would come out and trap the squirrels. The man charged me $250.00. I hired him two different times but did not notice a difference. Then I had the strobe lights installed. They work. They ran the squirrels out". (This testimony was emailed to Rodent Strobe Inc. 10 months after the strobes were installed.)

Rodent Strobe Also Worked for:

Dear Kevin, I purchased two Rodent Strobes from you in December. I immediately put them in my attic, and the results are astounding. Within days, the squirrels who had ruined many personal items plus chewed the insulation from my A/C ducting were gone. I still hear an occasional squirrel in the attic, but they do not leave any droppings or damage. I do not turn off the strobes at all. I live in an area with huge oak trees, and many other critters. I feel Rodent Strobe is without a doubt the ONLY way to get rid of squirrels in attics once and for all. I had spent a small fortune on repellents and other things that did not work. Now, I feel safe knowing that Rodent Strobe is protecting my attic, my belongings, and my electrical wiring. Squirrels who venture in the attic never stay long, and that is what I want. To say I am pleased with your product is an understatement. I have recommended Rodent Strobe to others, but they are trying to do things the "cheap" way with those repellents, which do NOT work. I once saw squirrels walking around in the repellent I used to use!!!
Even though everyone has seen the results I obtained, there are still the skeptics. Rodent Strobe is the most effective, humane way to control squirrel attic infestation I have ever seen. The strobe light makes common sense...make the attic a miserable place for them, and the squirrels will go elsewhere.  Again, words cannot my express my total satisfaction with Rodent Strobe. Feel free to use my letter as a testimonial to an outstanding product that does what it promises.

Sincerely,

Get Rid of Squirrels - testimony 2

"We had a terrible experience with roof rats in our attic. We tried pest control companies, traps and poison and nothing worked. Finally, we heard about the Rodent Strobe pest control strobe lights. After installing them, the rats were gone within just a couple of days and have not been back - we kept the strobes on to keep the rats from coming back in. These strobes are the only thing that worked! I highly recommend them".

"I can testify that the Rodent Strobe solution to invading squirrels in the attic works! After several continuous repairs to chewed entrances I became desperate when it would happen again. I heard about Rodent Strobe on the radio and contacted them right away. The results were almost immediate. After a couple of days they left and they haven't been back! Thanks to this ingenious plan, I can now relax".(This testimony was emailed to Rodent Strobe Inc. 2 months after the strobes were installed.)

"My attic had a nest of the fury tailed rats living in it. They were chewing on the rafters, they were chewing on the wiring, they even tried to chew on the blades of the exhaust fans. I installed 3 Rodent Strobes and then after a few days I closed the entrance holes and I haven't heard them up there since". "Kevin, The strobes I got from you do work very very well. I do not hear any scratching above in my attic anymore. This was a very difficult situation to deal with especially since we do not go into the attic all that often. So all is going well now."

When Rodent Strobe asked for permission to use this testimony this was the response:

"Yes-you are certainly welcome to post that comment on your website. So thank you once again and I have really and truly heard no scratching all winter long in my attic - a very good thing for us but I do see scores of squirrels running all around outside my home and in the general neighborhood." "No more traps! No more smells! No more Norway Rats! Dear Sir, Thanks to your innovative approach to rodent control I have been able to say good-bye to a problem we've had for years. A conventional-foundation home in a dense urban area I have learned is a natural gathering spot for our pesky friends. About the only good thing coming from this is the friendship I have developed with my Terminix man. Smelling "that Smell" and cleaning out the traps in my basement had become a nearly weekly ritual. No more! I knew there had to be a more effective solution. After visiting your website, I decided to give Rodent Strobe a try. Installation was a snap, and I have not had a problem in months. Now I only get to see my Terminix man for his regular quarterly visit, but we're both okay with that. I have told my friends and neighbors about your innovative approach to rodent and squirrel control. Best Regards -"

Get Rid of Squirrels - testimony 4

"I ordered some of your strobes on 4/15/09. (this email's date 6/1/09) I must say, I am SO delighted! I could hear the monster squirrels in my attic, chewing chewing, playing, Lord knows what. Every morning I awoke to the sounds of their party. Tried trapping, and yes, even poison too, before I knew it was illegal to poison. Anyhow, they never ate it, and I never caught a thing in my traps smeared with peanut butter. I even hired a guy to take care of it.....and still, the evil squirrels remained in complete control of my attic space. After 4 months of fighting the infestation, I was literally in tears and did not know what to do. I'm widowed, and couldn't afford thousands of $$$ in repair bills and pest control companies. I spoke with you, and ordered 3 lights. The day after I installed, the sound stopped. The next day after the sound stopped, I awoke to sound and activity over my bed (that was their spot, right over where I sleep!) and I thought "OH NO, the lights are not working!" However, after I listened for a few seconds, I realized it was a "different" sound than their normal sound. It was a very ANGRY sound. The squirrel, or squirrels making it were simply furious, the excessive chattering was very intense and angry. I did not hear so much scrambling and playing, as angry, angry chattering. It lasted for two days. After two days, I never heard another sound--they apparently gave up and left. I was delighted they were so angry, because they'd been making me angry for months!!! Oh, hallelujah!!!!! I never even bothered to call the handyman back to check again for holes (which the monsters had literally CHEWED into my house near the chimney to gain access!!!), just left the light flashing in my attic. I just want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU for such a wonderful, useful product!! It's really saved my bacon!"

"Kevin: By all means, yes, use the testimony. I am so delighted with this product, I tell everybody about it. It remains one of the best things I have ever bought. And the light still up there flashing away, not a squirrel, not a rat to be heard. One thing tho....when I got a lightning hit awhile back that fried my air conditioner unit, cable/internet, and phone lines, the HVAC guy and the insurance guy......and the cable guy.....and the phone guy....were all pretty freaked out when they went into my attic to assess the situation. Particularly the HVAC guy -- after I'd told him the lightning messed up my AC, and he opened the attic door to all this flashing when he went up there to check it. He jumped back and exclaimed 'WHAT IS THAT????" har de har har. Guess he thought it was the 220 volt cable that broke loose and dancing around, maybe. And I explained to him it was my squirrel chaser off-er, and he says skeptically "And that REALLY worked for you on the squirrels???", and I said 'YOU BETCHA, I wouldn't trade it for nuthin'!"

For seven years I had problems trying to get rid of roof rats in my Scottsdale, Arizona home. I tried everything to get rid of them. We had our home sealed twice and set traps numerous times, but we still kept having problems. We hired 3 or 4 pest control companies and they could not get rid of our roof rats. We had periods of no attic noise and no smell, but the rats would come back following previous generations’ urine scent trails (which can last for years). One day after a recent re-infestation we heard a rat in the attic above our living room. As I heard it near a ceiling light fixture the light started to flicker and made an electric buzzing sound. I realized the rodent was chewing on the wires in the attic and it dawned on me that “the smell” was not our biggest concern – A house fire was!

My efforts, to get rid of this problem in my attic once and for all, intensified. These efforts led me to strobe lights to get rid of the roof rats in my attic. After trying strobes from several different manufacturers, I found what I believe to be the best strobe lights manufactured to date-and solved my own pest problems and was able to get rid of the rats in my attic for good.

After two years of research, patent searches and counsel, product development and testing, field research and lab experiments, consultations with pest control professionals including owners of pest control companies and leaders in the academic arena, I have developed a line of sturdy and long lasting pest control products which have been proven to get rid of squirrels. Rodent Strobe is “the long term solution™” to get rid of squirrels and more.

Get Rid of Attic Squirrels - Squirrel Control Strobe Light

The High Intensity Get Rid of Squirrels Strobe pictured above uses only 4.8 watts of electricity - about the same as the average night light. This get rid of squirrels strobe covers a maximum of 900 sq .ft. (30X30) of space/area. For a greater "shock and awe" type of effect to get rid of squirrels in an attic - 500 sq. ft. (25X25) of coverage gives the maximum effect.

How It Works to Get Rid of Squirrels in the Attic:

Get Rid of Squirrels in attic- eye diagram

The ciliary muscles in the eye's of squirrels controls the expansion and contraction of the pupils. The usual adjustments made by this muscle in the eyes of squirrels are small. In response to the strobes in a dark (naturally dark or becomes dark at night) environment this muscle has to make dramatic adjustments (140-180 times per minute). An ophthalmologist I spoke to, at a world-renowned clinic in Scottsdale AZ, likened it to this: Imagine you lift a ten pound dumbbell weight one time. Then imagine that you lifted the same weight 1,500 times in a ten minute period. Your arm would be hurting for days. The ophthalmologist said the strobes would have the same effect on eyes of rodents and squirrels are rodents. RESULT: YOU GET RID OF THE SQUIRRELS IN YOUR ATTIC FOR GOOD.

Trapping Squirrels to Get Some Relief - Live Traps or Snap Traps to Get Rid of Squirrels: Are these the best way to Get Rid of Squirrels without additional problems?

Get Rid of Squirrels - snap trapThe Grey Squirrel's Latin name is Sciurus Carolinensis. Grey squirrels mate twice a year - in the early spring or late winter and in the summer. The mother squirrels will give birth to their young about 45 days after mating. Female squirrels have 4 to 6 baby squirrels per litter. A pair of healthy squirrels could produce a dozen baby squirrels each year. In twelve months the baby squirrels become breeding adult squirrels. Each litter of junior squirrels does not get to leave its mother's nest (often in a safe, dry attic) for the first 10 to 12 weeks of its life. Juvenile Squirrels are totally dependant on their mother's milk to live. If you have squirrels in the attic there most likely are baby squirrels in your attic 40% of the year. Trapping to get rid of squirrels or poisoning to get rid of squirrels could leave baby squirrels up in your attic in a nesting site to die of starvation. And - there are no poisons that are EPA registered to get rid of squirrels. So - Using poison to get rid of squirrels is illegal in all 50 States. Mother squirrels will nest in the safest place they can find to protect their young squirrels. Attics are ideal places for squirrels. The cavities in the your home's walls are many times chosen by nesting squirrels - the radiant heat in the winter and the cool air from air conditioning make the interior house walls good nesting sites for mother squirrels. These cavities are accessed by the attic squirrels through top of the wall openings in your attic. If you use rat poison to poison squirrels or a squirrel trap to try to get rid of squirrels in the attic, then you could be smelling dead, baby squirrels rotting in your attic or walls for weeks. And if you use a rat poison to kill the squirrels, the poisoned squirrels will do their best to get back to their nests in your attic to die and you will be smelling squirrels rotting bodies for weeks. Often interior walls have to be cut into to get to the decaying squirrels and to remove the dead squirrels. Attic squirrels may nest under attic flooring and the flooring will have to be removed to get to and to remove the dead squirrels in the attic. AND PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THAT IF YOU HEAR SQUIRRELS IN YOUR ATTIC THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, YOU MOST LIKELY HAVE 4 TO 6 BABY SQUIRRELS PER EACH MOTHER SQUIRREL IN THE ATTIC 40-50% OF THE YEAR.  AND MOTHER SQUIRRELS CAUGHT IN SQUIRREL TRAPS, WHETHER SNAP TRAPS OR LIVE TRAPPED, AND CARRIED AWAY - OR - POISONED SQUIRRELS - OR - SQUIRRELS SHOT WITH A PELLET GUN - COULD, 40% TO 50% OF THE YEAR, RESULT IN DEAD YOUNG SQUIRRELS IN YOUR ATTIC OR INTERIOR HOUSE WALLS LEFT TO DECAY AND SMELL.

Rat traps used for trapping to get rid of squirrels. Rat traps are designed for rats - not to get rid of squirrels! I am speaking of the snap trap variety of rat traps being used to get rid of squirrels. I have seen a squirrel that was trapped in one of these rat traps and it did not kill the attic squirrel. The rat trap used for trapping to get rid of squirrels was placed in an attic by a well meaning husband trying to get rid of his squirrels in the attic. He had placed about a dozen rat traps in a 2,000 square foot attic space infested with squirrels which he could not get rid of. The traps, intended to get rid of the squirrels, had been up in the attic for seven years! A squirrel ran past one and tripped the rat trap trigger.  The rat trap snapped shut on the attic squirrel's foot. The squirrel was not killed and could not get rid of the trap that was meant to get rid of him. Where do you think this injured squirrel with a rat trap attached to its broke leg ran to? It ran to an interior house wall to get back to where its nest was. There's no place like home. The squirrel managed to get its broken leg through the wall opening in the attic with the rat trap still attached. But as it tried to get out the interior wall space to get back up into the attic the rat trap used to get rid of squirrels became stuck and so was the injured squirrel. Unfortunately the squirrel had to be put down.

If you use a rat trap to get rid of squirrels in your attic - the attic squirrels will usually not face an immediate death being as the rat traps are not designed to be used to get rid of squirrels in the attic. The squirrels will definitely suffer and if the squirrels are able to get to their nests - the squirrels or squirrel will often retreat to its squirrel nest in your attic to die and rot and smell.

If you use a rat poison to get rid of squirrels in your attic, besides the risk of it or its young dying in your attic or home's wall, is the risk of a sickened or dead family pet.

Every year there a hundreds of cases of secondary poisonings from dogs or cats chewing on or partially ingesting poisoned attic squirrels. If a dog or cat finds dead squirrels - and they can smell the poisoned squirrels out, they find what to them is a chew toy and/or an extra meal. Also, it is easier for cats or dogs to get or capture poisoned squirrels - as it is not as hard to chase and get a hold of poisoned and dying squirrels. As they carry around the dead squirrels in their mouths, as some kind of trophy, they are ingesting the very poisons that were used to get rid of the squirrels in the attic. At least, your pet could get sick and sometimes they die. This death will occur some times because there is often, over time, more dead squirrels that they find and the poisons accumulate in the pet's blood stream until it becomes sick and dies, or at least runs up a considerable veterinary bill.

The scent glands of squirrels are located in their feet. As they get around the squirrels leave little scent road maps for other squirrels to follow. The pheromones in rodent urine (squirrels are rodents) can last up to two years. Tree squirrels love to get into and live in attics. It’s warmer, drier and safer place for squirrels to get away from predators. Unfortunately most attics are not equipped with toilets for squirrels. But this is not a problem for the squirrels - they will just get urine and defecate feces all over your attic. And I do mean squirrels get it all over. It is amazing to see an attic where squirrels have been residing. Raisin sized dung from the squirrels will get over the attic and it will get matted down by the nesting squirrels in the insulation - which becomes more and more stained with and smells of urine. It is truly nasty – but not to the squirrels in your attic. The urine and glands in the squirrels’ feet leave pheromone trails which are like a welcome mat or “attic for rent” sign for future squirrels. This is why trapping squirrels, poisoning squirrels, or house sealing to get rid of squirrels in your attic has to be done over and over and over by homeowners at great cost each time and most definitely accumulatively. I know from experience and so does my pocketbook.

Get Rid of Squirrels - live trap I am in the pest control industry. I have to be familiar with many aspects of the industry. In one of the pest control classes I attended, taught by a pest control inspector, the inspector informed us that integrity was a big part of keeping our state license. As part of ensuring this, the inspectors would “shadow”/observe unawares a pest control operator and before an inspector does a site, chemical, equipment, paper work, and service vehicle inspection he/she would often watch the pest professional from a distance without the pest control operator’s knowledge he/she was being watched/inspected. The inspector teaching the class said that in the vast majority of the times animals, such as squirrels, were live trapped at a customer’s residence or business the animal pests, rats or squirrels, were unethically released within two blocks of where the rats or squirrels were caught. In these cases the rats or squirrels would just return to the capture site and get right back to living in the attic. Pest control operators in most states are required to take the rats or squirrels at least two miles away from the capture site before releasing the rats or squirrels. The inspector told the class that our license would be in jeopardy if we were caught doing this unethical practice.

So if you hire a pest control company to live trap to get rid of squirrels and/or seal your home or business to try and get rid of squirrels - what certainty do you have that the pest control employee won’t just let the squirrels, mouse, or rat out of the live trap just down the street? Again this was not the exception but the majority according to the inspector’s class.  And if you use a snap trap to get rid of the squirrels, or glue traps to get rid of the squirrels, or zap trap to get rid of the squirrels – What keeps other squirrels from following the scent trail to your home or property?

Get Rid of Squirrels - ruby slippersAttic Squirrels' Motto:

"There's No Place Like Home" ... aka. "You Are Not Going To Get Rid Of Me So Easy."

Squirrel Traps to Get Rid of Squirrels and the Homing Behavior of Squirrels and How / Why the Squirrels Get Back to Your Attic so Fast:

Eighty percent of attic squirrels that are trapped in live squirrel traps and released within two miles are able to get back to your their home.

This number, of squirrels that get back to your attic, drops in percentage with each mile that the squirrels are taken from the capture site. At a 5-7 mile range a significant, but reduced, number of trapped and released squirrels still get back to the capture site. In field experiments approximately 5% of trapped and released squirrels were able to get back from as far a 10-12 miles from where they were caught in live squirrel traps. One squirrel trapped and carried about twenty-five miles away from the squirrel trap site was able to get back to its home in about a months time. I wonder if this attic squirrel was thinking "they are not going to get rid of me!".

In the two experiments, from which the figures were taken, over 100 individual squirrels were trapped and released in attempts to get rid of the squirrels. One squirrel trapping and homing behavior study was performed  by the University Of Connecticut. The other trapping squirrels and homing behavior study was performed by a large pest control company over a three year period. In each case the trapped squirrels were caught in live squirrel traps and transported with special attention paid to the prevention of the squirrels having visual cues along the traveled paths aka. they could not see where they were going with the intent that the squirrels could not get back. This was done because squirrels that are trapped and then can see along the route to their release site almost always get back to the customer's attic. Hey, squirrels can remember to - turn left at the park and then right at the McDonalds too.

Still if the attic squirrels you are trying to get rid of can't see the relocation route - how do they get back? One study by University of Laval in Quebec, Canada found that red squirrels, when released from the squirrel traps, had a basic sense of the direction which the squirrels needed to get back to the place where the squirrels were trapped. But, the trapped and released squirrels did not seem to have any knowledge of how far they were from the place where the squirrel traps were set and they were captured. Seventeen squirrels were trapped and released in this trapping squirrels and release homing behavior study.  This trapping squirrels and how they get back study suggest that the squirrels use two strategies to get back the the site where the squirrels were trapped. The first is the squirrels innate sense of direction orientation. The second was the exploratory trips the squirrels made to get back to the place where the squirrel traps were placed and the squirrels were captured. Since the squirrels did not see the travel route  form the squirrel trap placement to the release sites how did they find their way / get back home if they had no visual cues by which the squirrels could orient themselves. Was it a re-adjusting of the squirrels internal sense of direction or the squirrels keen sense of smell that enable them to pick of the pheromones of familiar squirrels? In another study done on a different member of the rodent family suggests that visual cues or a lack of them may not be the only mechanism of the homing behavior of squirrels. In this other rodent homing study the mice (cousins of squirrels) were trapped. Half of the mice were blinded. The blind mice were able to get back to the place where they were trapped equal to the seeing mice. This study was repeated ten times with a new set of mice each time and the blind mice were able to get back home just as well as the seeing mice. Still thinking about using squirrel traps to get rid of your squirrels in attic problem? Still thinking about using squirrel traps to get rid of your squirrels in attic problem? Still thinking about using squirrel traps to get rid of your squirrels in attic problem? Sorry for repeating myself  - but squirrel traps can put you into a repetitive cycle too. And if you hire a professional squirrel trapper the cost are very often repetitive too.

The preponderance of the squirrels that were able to get back to their attic nests in most squirrel tarp studies were male squirrels. Within a two mile range this male to female ratio, of squirrels that were able to get back to their attic nests, was not as pronounced. Closer to, and up to, the two mile range most of the squirrels that were able to get back were male squirrels. After two miles the number of trapped and able to get back female squirrels dropped significantly. The two experiments were performed in opposing seasons. The University of Connecticut trapping squirrels experiment was conducted in the middle of winter. The pest control company's trapping squirrels experiment was conducted over three consecutive summers. The term of the pest control company's experiment would have covered the period during which the female squirrels would have had nursing/blind baby squirrels in their attic nests. Again, few of these female squirrels were able to get back to their nesting sites to care for their baby squirrels if the mother squirrels were carried more than two miles away from the live squirrel trap site.

In the University of Connecticut experiment the trapped squirrels were individually identified and marked via toe clippings and released. The squirrels that were able to get back to the capture site were recaptured and taken a farther distance away and still half of the squirrels were able to get back - all of theses second trip squirrels that were able to get back were male squirrels.

Very little is known about the internal mechanisms of the homing ability of squirrels. Other rodents show the same abilities to get back to their capture sites.  In one experiment of the homing abilities of mice almost all of the trapped and release mice were able to get back to their nesting areas when taken and release up to two miles away.

In each of these squirrel trapping experiments the miles measured were in straight lines ("as a crow flies"). In the pest control company's trapping squirrels experiments the mileage was measured also in a straight line but in some cases the additional precaution of traveling in a zigzag pattern was employed and this additional measure did not seem to confound or rid the squirrels innate homing abilities. Again, 'There's no place like home" - even for squirrels you are trying to get rid of which nest in your attic.

Get Rid of Squirrels - Squirrel with acornThe Reason Attic Squirrels Try So Hard to Get Back? - NUTS!

Squirrels spend a great deal of their time foraging to get winter food stores. Squirrels will scent mark and bury hundreds of acorns to get through the winter. Imagine if you had all your winter food stored in one place. Imagine that you spent a great deal of your time protecting your territory and the food hidden on it. Ever heard of a Fort?, Castle?, Bank Vault? And imagine that your saved stores could last for two years. And someone kidnapped you and took you far away from your home and its food. I'd get back too! And,  if you don't get back? - Other squirrels will scent out your hidden food stores and move right in. So much for trapping to get rid of squirrels.

The Get Rid of Squirrels Long Term Solution:

With Get Rid of Squirrels Strobe Lights to get rid of squirrels in your attic these problems are addressed. First, we have found that if squirrels are living in a house walls that the attic squirrels access through a spaces that are protected by high intensity strobes that the squirrels will give up trying to get to their nesting areas in the walls. It just is not worth it - see Rodent Strobe's How It Works page to learn more about how it works to get rid of squirrels for good.

Second, Attic squirrels are good mothers. If their baby squirrels are in what the mother squirrels deem as "unsafe" area the squirrels will get their baby squirrels to another place that she sees as safe. We recommend that a person using pest control strobe lights to get rid of squirrels simply turn off the strobes for a few hours at a time during the first few days to allow the mother squirrels to get their young and relocate them. Then when you get rid of all the squirrels - turn on the strobes and leave them on. Problem solved! No dead, rotting squirrels in your attic or walls. No dead or sick family pets. No repeating and repeating the trapping squirrels, to get rid of them, nightmare.

The Foraging Behavior of Attic Squirrels and How it Relates to the ability to Get Rid of Squirrels in YOUR Attic via Squirrel Traps.

Get Rid of Squirrels - squirrel withgathered nutsThe most active foraging time for the squirrels that live in your attic is the fall. As the fall season progresses the attic squirrels get busy spending a greater percentage of their time foraging and hiding their winter food stores that will get the squirrels through the cold winter months. The attic squirrel's typical behavior is to carry a nut, such as an acorn or pecan, about 50 feet from the tree from which they get it and then pretend to bury it. Yes you read right - squirrels are smart. We protect our money with passwords and pin codes. Attic squirrels protect their food stores by pretending to bury them as many as three times. Squirrels will dig holes. Then the squirrels will pretend to put the nuts in the holes. The squirrels cover the holes with leaves and dirt to get them out of sight - and repeats this process to get rid of any chance that other squirrels will find and get their food stores. And, if a squirrel sees that it is being watched it will then repeat this process with the same nut for several days. The squirrel will dig up its buried acorns and relocate each nut with the same deceptive behavior for each nut. Then after a full day of foraging and hiding its winter stores it will retreat at dusk and will be a happy squirrel in attic - with food stores in your yard. Researchers have even dug around areas where a squirrel has buried a nut in the sight of the squirrel and the squirrel will then multiply its deceptive tactics in order to protect its winter stores from anybody else that might want to get them.

Squirrels get very territorial, especially the male squirrels spend a great deal of their time trying to get rid of other male squirrels in their territory - in this case - girls ARE allowed. This territorial behavior makes being able to get rid of squirrels via squirrel traps very difficult. If a male squirrel is caught in a cage squirrel trap and released into an area with other male squirrels which are protecting their nut stores the trapped and relocated squirrel is chased away.  Getting rid of squirrels by other squirrels! This is another reason why the preponderance of squirrels that are caught in a squirrel trap that get back to their capture sight are male squirrels. Females get more readily accepted into a new squirrel community especially by the male squirrels in the area. Squirrel trapping professionals love this because you will be calling them back to fish dead baby squirrels out of a wall. I talked to one pest professional who owns a rather large pest control company which is back-logged with squirrel control work setting squirrel traps and house sealing for at least a month in the months from October to May. He told me that by the time he usually will get through with the added up squirrel trapping and house sealing charges to the typical home it averages from $1,200 - 2,600 per home. Trapping and sealing to get rid of squirrels can get expensive! And, if the pest professional who trapped the squirrels in the attic releases the squirrels within 2 miles of your attic (and according to pest control inspectors most do) the squirrels. eighty percent of the time, will get back to your attic within about 2 weeks of your having paid to get rid of the squirrels.

A Failure to Get Rid of Squirrels in the Attic means wire damage:

Did you know that 25% of house fires of "unknown cause" are attributed to Attic Squirrels, Roof Rats, Norway Rats and Mice chewing on wires?

Learn more about the need to get rid of squirrels and the wire damage that squirrels cause:

The term “rodent” comes from the Latin verb rodere (to gnaw). Rodents, such as Squirrels are constantly gnawing on wood and wiring because their teeth are continually growing. For instance, the grey squirrel’s teeth grow a half a foot in length each year. Rodents, such as Norway Rats, Roof Rats, Mice and Squirrels, have to chew and gnaw constantly to get and keep their teeth’s length in check otherwise their teeth would get too long - rendering Squirrels unable to eat and thus starve to death.

As a result of this constant need to gnaw twenty-five percent of fires of “unknown cause” are attributed to rodents, such as Roof Rats, Attic Squirrels and Mice, chewing on electrical wires. A failure to get rid of squirrels in your attic could lead to your house catching fire in the middle of the night.

Attic Squirrels Wire Damage and House Fires - A Call to Action to Get Rid of Squirrels in the Attic

According to the US Fire Administration, a house fire occurs every 79 seconds. There are usually about 50,000 – 60,000 residential fires of “unknown cause” each year in the US. Officials at the Department of Homeland Security estimate that they get reports from fire departments on only half of the actual number of fires that occur each year. This means that the number of fires of “unknown cause” each year could be double the 50 to 60 thousand average. That’s possibly up to 120,000 fires of “unknown cause” each year in the US as a result of homeowners inability to get rid of the squirrels in the attic. And remember that 25% of these fires are attributed to Squirrels in the attic, Roof Rats aka. Attic Rats and Attic Mice chewing on attic wiring. Therefore, based on government statistics and statements made by government authorities, the number of residential fires cause by the failure to get rid of Attic Squirrels, Roof Rats, Norway Rats and Mice are approximately 15,000 fires annually and could be as high as 30,000 fires. If you have rodents, such as squirrels or mice, in your attic – you probably have wire damage too - A Good Reason to Get Rid of Squirrels in YOUR Attic.

Rodents (squirrels are rodents) make up more than one-third of the known kinds of mammals - they are the most abundant mammal in many parts of the world. Most rodents are nocturnal or crepuscular; tree squirrels and ground squirrels are strictly diurnal; others may be active either by night or by day.

Get Rid of Squirrels Wires Chewed

Squirrels live for 3-5 years. Squirrels mate between February and March and also between July and August. Adult female squirrels have two litters a year with 4-6 baby squirrels per litter. The young squirrels remain in the nest for about 10 weeks. Squirrels’ teeth are continually growing. Squirrels have 22 teeth. Attic squirrels gnaw and chew on just about anything they can get their teeth around. Squirrels even grind their teeth in their sleep.

Get Rid of Squirrels Power line wire damageCity officials of New York City attribute at least one power outage each day to squirrels. Squirrels actually cause more power outages than lightning in some states. In Georgia in 2006 there were 16,750 power outages caused by squirrels. Not all of these outages were caused by the squirrels’ chewing on the wires – some were just contact electrocutions but many were via contact with the metal wire after the squirrel chewed through the soft plastic wire jacket covering and the squirrel was electrocuted. In the photo a squirrel was seen daily chewing this power line wire.

Squirrels usually cluster in groups up to about twelve. So, if you hear squirrels in your attic you may have a migrating population that will stay in numbers of one to a full dozen squirrels in your attic. An acre of area may contain multiple groups of squirrels. If you get rid of some of the squirrels in your attic – well, if you’ve built it they will come.

Get Rid of Squirrels' SQUIRREL FACTS:

Grey Squirrels

Get Rid of Squirrels Chewing Attic WiresSquirrels like to chew on wiring in particular. Squirrels do not chew on the wiring to sharpen their teeth. Attic squirrels chew on wiring to get their teeth clean. Squirrels are the cleanest of the rodent family. Male grey squirrels will groom twice as much as a female squirrels. Squirrels use the bark of trees to get and keep their teeth clean. Squirrels use a back and forth motion when chewing on the tree bark to get their teeth clean. This serves as a sort of dental floss for squirrels to get their teeth clean. And squirrels floss very regularly. The soft plastic outer jacket on home wiring is a perfect teeth cleaning material for squirrels that get into your attic. Every attic with squirrels I have inspected has had wire damage. Every single one has had wires that attic squirrels have chewed through to the copper wire center. If attic squirrels chew through the wire outer jacket and exposes both the positive and the negative copper wires then the squirrel in the attic becomes a dead squirrel in the attic by means of electrocution. Squirrels in the attic that make "contact" while chewing on attic wiring will often catch on fire as the electric currents cook the squirrels. Also, the "contact" made by squirrels in the attic chewing on wiring can cause an electrical "short" in wiring. An eclectic short caused by squirrels that get in the attic or other wire chewing rodents that get in attics cause an estimated 15,000 residential fires per year in the US.

Controlling Attic Squirrels - How to get rid of squirrels in the attic without additional problems.

How to get rid of squirrels in the attic? - House sealing, squirrel trapping and removal, live traps, animal removal, squirrel removal, squirrel traps, rat traps, mice traps to get rid of squirrels - what’s best?

Rat traps are designed for small rats - not to get rid of squirrels! I am speaking of the snap trap variety of rat traps. I have seen a squirrel that was trapped in one of these rat traps and it did not kill the squirrel. The rat trap used as a squirrel trap was placed in an attic by a well meaning husband attempting to get rid of his squirrels in the attic. He had placed about 12 rat traps in a 2,000 square foot attic space hoping to get rid of the squirrels in his attic. The traps had been up in the attic for seven years! A squirrel ran past one of the traps and tripped the rat trap trigger.  The rat trap snapped shut on one of the attic squirrel's back foot. Where do you think this injured attic squirrel, with a rat trap attached to its broke leg, ran to? The squirrel ran to an interior house wall where its nest was. There's no place like home. The squirrel managed to force its broken leg through the wall opening in the attic with the rat trap still attached. But as it tried to leave the interior wall space to go back up into the attic the rat trap, used as a squirrel trap, became stuck and so was the injured attic squirrel . Unfortunately the attic squirrel had to be put down.

If you use a rat trap as a squirrel trap to get rid of squirrels in the attic - a squirrel will usually not face a quick death because the rat traps are not designed to be used as a squirrel trap. The squirrel will definitely suffer and if it is able to move it will often retreat to its squirrel nest in your attic to die and rot and smell.

Squirrels will migrate – in mass. In 1791 in Ohio the population of squirrels exploded and the squirrels in mass migrated to the town of Belpre and consumed the entire area’s corn crop. The squirrels, in mass, used their swimming skills to get across the Ohio River into West Virginia and began devouring the corn crops there. Needless to say these communities did everything they could to get rid of the squirrels before the squirrels where able to get rid of their crops.

Get Rid of Squirrels - Facts about Squirrels. The more you know the better equipped you are to get rid of squirrels:

There are about three hundred varieties of squirrels.

Squirrels' brains get to be about the size of a walnut.

Squirrels get to communicate with each other through different chirps.

Squirrels can run fast. Squirrels can get up to a speed of about twenty miles per hour.

Squirrels eat up to 2 pounds of food each week. Attic squirrels' diets consist of nuts, acorns, bird seed, bird eggs, mushrooms, corn, wheat, insects, garbage, and berries. Squirrels scent mark their food before they hide it for the winter.

Squirrels have double-jointed hind legs. This aids squirrels in their ability to get up and get down trees quickly.

Squirrels can fall up to 100 feet without injury.

Squirrels have 4 toes on their front feet. The nails on their front feet are very sharp which helps them hold onto surfaces the squirrels are climbing.

Squirrels have 5 toes on their back feet.

Eastern Grey Squirrels can also be found in Western states as well as in Ireland, England and South Africa.

Squirrels get their name "squirrels" from a Greek word meaning "shadow tail".

Male squirrels can get the "scent" female squirrels in heat a mile away.

Squirrels can get across expanses by jumping a distance of approximately 20 feet.

Squirrels get found on almost every continent.

Squirrels have eyes on the sides of their head which allows the squirrels to ge a good look behind themselves.

Squirrels have predators which try to get them - these include snakes, cats, owls, hawks, foxes, bobcats and raccoons to name a few. Spending the night in an attic is a good way for squirrels to get rid of the constant threat from these predators.

Squirrels will get their nuts clean before burying them. The squirrels will first crack the nut open with their sharp teeth. The squirrels will then get the nuts clean by licking them. The squirrels will also rub the nuts on their faces to get rid of dirt on the nuts. Both the licking and the rubbing of a nuts by squirrels will mark the nut with the squirrels' scent and make the nuts easier to find after they get buried. Squirrels can find the nuts even under a foot of snow. If you have squirrels in the attic they will also hide nuts in the attic. I have been in a attic where multiple squirrels lived and it was littered with peanuts and peanut shells that a neighbor threw out in his yard to feed the squirrels. The squirrels in the attic had done extensive wire damage - with multiple chewed through and copper exposed wire. Attic squirrels may be cute in the yard but they are a fire hazard in an attic. This is why it is so important to get rid of squirrels in the attic.

When squirrels sense danger their first instinct is to stand perfectly still rather than to get away by running. I remember a particular squirrel in an attic that upon seeing me "froze" and stood still for a minute or two looking straight at me without so much as a twitch. The squirrel in the attic did not run to get away until I moved towards the "frozen" squirrel.

A squirrel's meandering path while crossing a road is its way of confusing an on-coming car. This very squirrel behavior causes the death of thousands of squirrels each year as this squirrel behavior causes them to run right back in front of the car they are attempting to get away. Many a homeowner has had to call a pest control professional to "fish out" dead baby squirrels in the attic - squirrels that have been orphaned by a neighbor's car.

When squirrels' nests become infested with parasites and fleas the squirrels will get up and will move to a different nest.

Squirrel Repellents to Get Rid of Squirrels in the Attic

Trying to get rid of squirrels by means of wolf urine, coyote urine, fox urine, predator urine, or scents? Will these get rid of squirrels in the attic?

Why shake away your hard earned money on odor repellents, that the academic pest professionals say do not work to get rid of squirrels?
In the first place - been there done that. I can tell you from personal experience that this does not work to get rid of squirrels for long - In my case it did not get rid of the squirrels at all. Besides I do not want more urine smell in my attic. Enough is enough. Oh! (But the web sites say) this will get rid of the squirrels because the squirrels will smell the predator urine and the squirrels will get frightened away. Please do not waste your hard earned money on these products trying to get rid of squirrels. Too many people do.

Here's Something Else to Think About Before Using Using Fox Urine to Get Rid of Squirrels:

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for one of these products lists fox urine as a main ingredient. Where is all this dried fox urine coming from? Are there fox port-a-potties placed in the forest? It takes a lot of fox urine to produce these products. Where is it coming from? The largest source of fox urine on the market is supplied by the fur trade industry. Hundreds of foxes in cages with trays beneath each cage to collect the marketable urine. Do you want to purchase a product that does not get rid of squirrels for very long - if at all? Do you want your money going  to support the fur trade industry?

Mint Oil to Get Rid of Squirrels?

Mint Oil to Get Rid of SquirrelsWill Mint Oil Get Rid of Squirrels? I recently spoke to a man who is using mint oil in an attempt to try and get rid of rodents (Squirrels are rodents) in an attic in Memphis, TN. I asked him how it was working - His response was "OK" and then he added "The only problem is that I am having to spray the attic with the mint oil about every three weeks". He commented that he had to re-spray so often because the smell of the mint oil did not last very long. Needless to say he was a little tired of spraying the attic with the mint oil to try and get rid of the rodents. Besides this can get expensive. A one ounce bottle of mint oil can cost about $25 to $30 - that could get expensive if you mixed the mint oil with water and sprayed your attic every three weeks. Mint oil to get rid of squirrels - No thanks!

Plastic Owls to Get Rid of Squirrels in Attic

Have you ever seen a picture of a scarecrow out in a corn field with a bird sitting on it? – I have. Again, please don’t waste your money on a plastic owl in an attempt to get rid of squirrels – unless all you want is one or two days of squirrel control until the squirrels figures out it’s not real.

Blood Meal to Get Rid of Squirrels.

Get rid of the squirrels feeding in and on your garden and you move a step closer to being able to get rid of squirrels that are living in your attic. I asked a Master Gardener how to get rid of rabbit that were feeding on a lawn area. Rabbits like squirrels are rodents and what will work to get rid of rabbits will also work to get rid of squirrels that are feeding in your garden and living in your attic. The Master Gardener was really a master gardener - one of his jobs included taking care of the turf on a major league baseball team's stadium field. The master gardener told me "blood meal will get rid of the rabbits". Rabbits and Squirrels are prey of coyotes, foxes, cats, etc. Predator urine will not get rid of the squirrels and rabbits for long - but blood meal will and it is good for your garden. Blood Meal is available from most garden centers and is a commonly used fertilizer. Now, Blood meal is just what it sounds like - it is dried / powdered blood from the processing of beef and it is one of the most used natural fertilizers around. Rabbits and squirrels will get away from a place in which the dirt smells like blood - the squirrels do not want to "get it" next. Blood meal to get rid of squirrels in your garden - experts say it works.

Will a radio in the attic get rid of squirrels in the attic?

Radio to Get Rid of Squirrels in the AtticThis will work for a day or two to get rid of squirrels - but that is about it. I know people who sleep with a radio or a television on all night with the volume up. When asked how they could sleep with such noise they respond “Oh, I’m used to it”. The pest will get used to it too. No one likes to be kicked out of their home – squirrels are no exception.

Pellet Gun to Get Rid of Squirrels in the attic?

What if you just wound the squirrels and the injured squirrels are able to get back to their nests – IN YOUR ATTIC – and die? Well, happy smells to you Annie Oakley. Besides, in many towns this is an illegal method to get rid of squirrels.

Squirrel Traps and Rat Traps to Get Rid of Squirrels: some things to consider before you purchase.

This is a way to get rid of squirrels - BUT, there are several drawbacks. First, be careful for your fingers – if it can snap a mouse’s spine it can certainly break or severely hurt a finger. Children can get hurt. Family pets could get hurt. Emergency rooms are expensive.

Mouse traps, mice traps, rat traps are meant for smaller rodents. Attempting to get rid of squirrels in your attic via this method could mean a squirrel caught in one of these could suffer for hours. A large rat (and rats can get as large as a small cat) might possibly have to be killed while still caught in the trap. Pest control manuals recommend attaching snap traps to a larger board so a larger wounded animal caught in a trap doesn’t drag it elsewhere where it will die and smell and be hard to get to and retrieve. I have personally seen a squirrel in an attic that caught its foot in a snap trap. The squirrel then retreated with the snap trap attached to its foot into an inner house wall and became caught in between the attic wall and the open attic space because the trap would not fit back through the space between the wall and the attic. This animal would have died in the wall and would have rotted and smelled had it not been found and removed.

If you use a rat trap, or a mouse trap, or a squirrel trap that is designed to kill the pest - what if it has baby squirrels living in the attic or wall spaces of your property? The baby squirrels get to die too - in your attic or walls - and the smell is horrible! Plus then you have to go through the expense of having a pest control professional crawling through your attic and possibly cutting into your walls to get to remove the dead litter of squirrels. But with Rodent Strobe if the strobes are turned off for short periods of time (several hours) during the first few days - the rat, or squirrels have a chance to get its young squirrels and the whole family leaves. This is the way to get rid of squirrels that does not leave a rotting dead squirrels in your walls or attic. This is truly the best way to get rid of squirrels living in your attic.

Pest control manuals give guidelines on disposal of trapped and killed or injured squirrels. First, warnings are made that a wounded animal can be very dangerous. Secondly, dead squirrels can carry diseases so get and wear the proper protective equipment. Third, It is recommended that the dead squirrels be sprayed thoroughly with a clorox and water solution before removal and disposal. Also be aware that the dead squirrels may have fleas that have been feeding on its blood and if one of its fleas bites you then you could get infected with a pathogen. Lyme disease, a disease that was once thought only to be in deer ticks, has now been found in fleas. The “black death” was spread by fleas on roof rats and both roof rats and squirrels have been carriers of the "black death". Ground squirrels in Northern Arizona have recently tested positive for the "black death" pathogen. And Grey Squirrels in Denver have tested positive for the plague recently too. This is another reason to get rid of squirrels.

Moth balls in the attic to Get Rid of Squirrels is illegal and toxic to humans.

The use of moth balls in an attic or other spaces to get rid of squirrels in the attic is illegal in all 50 states. If you use moth balls to get rid of squirrels, to get rid of bats in the attic, and to get rid of raccoons in the attic or to get rid of any other vertebrate pest or even suggest their use to someone you are committing, at least a misdemeanor, and even a felony in many states. If you are considering using Moth balls to get rid of squirrels in the attic then you need to read this - Moth balls are toxic to humans and pets. Most moth balls are made from naphthalene which chemical companies get from coal tar. The gas emitted from moth balls is heavier than air and will get / seep from your attic into the lower levels of your home and get into your living areas. Many people will recommend moth balls to get rid of squirrels in the attic and to get rid of other pests. In states such as Arizona, California, Florida and New York this simple recommendation to get rid of squirrels is a felony. Moth balls take oxygen out of the air. Their purpose is to suffocate moths in a contained environment - to get rid of moths by suffocation. It is similar, very similar to running a car engine in a garage with the garage door closed. Several years ago a friend had a yard man tell her to put moth balls in her attic to drive out the squirrels. It worked for a while but the amount of moth balls she had to put in the attic spaces to drive out the squirrels made her house stink of moth balls. Now, my friend could not smell the moth balls after several days, but everyone who entered her house was over-whelmed by the odor. I have asthma and when visiting her it greatly bothered my asthma. Two years later the lowest places in her house, such as bathroom cabinets, linen closets, etc. still smells of moth balls. Many people who make this huge mistake then spend years trying to get rid of the moth ball smell in their house. Good luck! To this day, freshly laundered towels that have been placed in her bathroom cabinets soon get the smell of the moth balls. Again, my friend could not smell the moth balls she used to try to get rid of squirrels - but everyone who entered her house could smell them. Same thing with squirrels you are trying to get rid of - they get used to the smell - unless you use so many moth balls that the toxic vapors are so heavy that you get rid of the squirrels – which means these heavier than air toxic vapors are seeping down and get into your living areas and get into your lungs and then get into your blood stream. Did you know that babies that have been wrapped in blankets which were stored with moth balls have been found to have high levels of naphthalene in their blood streams? Moth balls to get rid of squirrels, been there – smelled that, in most cases it is illegal and very toxic.

Symptoms of Mothball Exposure:

  1. Nose, eyes, and lung irritation.
  2. Difficulty breathing, asthma worsening, asthma attacks.
  3. Headaches, nausea, dizziness.
  4. Cancer – moth balls are possible carcinogens.
  5. Effect on babies- skin rash, anemia, jaundice.

Get Rid of Squirrels in the attic and Get Rid of Rats in the Attic by means of ultrasonic pest control, ultrasonic repellents, ultrasonic repellers?

Been there, done that too! I wish I had my money back. That ultrasonic thing was expensive and the owner of the company told me how great it would work to get rid of the pest. Yeah buddy. It did not get rid of the pests - even for a day. Did you know that several of the leading vertebrate pest specialists - PhD. Professors, experts in the field have tried to get the Federal Trade Commission to ban ultrasonic pest control devises because they do not work to get rid of squirrels or other pests? The Federal Trade Commission has published a warning to all ultrasonic pest repeller manufacturers and retailers. There may be an initial effect but research shows that the pests return and become habituated (get used to the noise). How long do ultrasonics work to get rid of squirrels? Research shows that the repelling effect last for 1-3 days, but after 3-7 days the squirrels get habituated to the noise and continue living in the space not bothered enough to get out. Additional research confirms that ultrasonic pest repellers may have a partial or transitory effect, but have no persistent effectiveness to get rid of squirrels. Most academic researchers urge legislatures and consumers to view ultrasonic pest repellents with skepticism. The New York State Consumer Protection Board cautions against using ultrasonic repellers to get rid of squirrels or to get rid of rats. In addition to this, contrary to the claims of many ultrasonic pest control device sellers, there is scientific evidence that some of these devices cause hearing loss in pets, most especially dogs . Even the US Army does not approve of ultrasonic pest control devices to get rid of pests.

I traveled to San Diego to speak with the vertebrate pest expert who does the pest control products investigations for the Federal Trade Commission. When I told him I had a pest control product that I needed some help in designing container and field experiments for product testing the first thing he asked me (with a look of disgust) was “this isn’t another one of those ultrasonic pest repellers is it? – Those things don’t work”. I am pleased to say that he seemed very impressed with my product, especially when he was in a dark room with my strobe flashing and he was commenting that it was making him dizzy as he moved around the room. Then I observed him try several times to turn on the lights with the wall switch and his hand was meandering around for several seconds before he was able to secure his hand on the switch and turn the lights on. I was one happy camper.

With the Rodent Strobe line of pest control strobe lights to get rid of squirrels - the problem of habituation is completely solved. The squirrels can not get used to and adapt to the constant high intensity lightning bright flashes. We have found that if squirrels or attic rats are living in a house wall that the squirrels or attic rats access through a space that is protected by a high intensity strobe that the squirrels or the attic rats will give up trying to get to their nesting areas in the wall. It just is not worth it to the squirrels in your attic - see Rodent Strobe's How It Work to get rid of squirrels page.

Attic squirrels and attic rats are good mothers. If the young squirrels or attic rats are in what the rodent mother deems an "unsafe" area she will move them to another place that she sees as safe. We recommend that a person using pest control strobe lights to get rid of squirrels or attic rats simply turn off the strobes for a few hours at a time during the first few days to allow the squirrels and attic rats to move their young. Then when you get rid of all the attic squirrels, attic rats, raccoons, etc., - turn on the strobes and leave them on (they are extremely energy efficient - only 4.8 watts for Rodent Strobe's Get Rid of Squirrels Strobe). Problem solved! No dead, rotting squirrels or rats. No dead or sick family pets. No repeating and repeating the squirrel trapping, or rat trapping nightmare. You Get Rid of Squirrels in YOUR Attic For Good!
